Join RSSB as a Member

RSSB is a not-for-profit organisation whose purpose is to help our members and consequently the industry to:

  • Where reasonably practicable, continuously improve the level of safety in the rail industry,
  • Drive out unnecessary cost and
  • Improve business performance

Membership is open to

  • Network Rail and each holder of a licence under section 8 of the Railways Act if such persons are required to become members of the Company under the terms of their respective licences;
  • Any Supplier which is not required by the terms of any licence held by it under section 8 of the Railways Act to become a member of the Company;
  • Any Train Operator which is not required by the terms of any licence held by it under section 8 of the Railways Act to become a member of the Company; and
  • Any Infrastructure Controller (other than Network Rail), subject to the prior approval of the Office of Rail Regulation having been obtained (such approval to be given only after consultation with the Health and Safety Executive and the Department for Transport).

Membership categories are as follows:

(a) Passenger train operators
(b) Non-passenger train operators
(c) Network Rail and other infrastructure controllers
(d) Rolling stock owners
(e) Infrastructure contractors (please refer to the Constitution Agreement for clarification)
(f) Suppliers (including rolling stock manufacturers)

Benefits of membership include

  • Coming together with other members to exchange views, share best practice and experiences.
  • The ability to influence Railway Group Standards by being able to nominate representatives onto the various Standards Committees. RSSB members are granted copyright licence to use all Railway Group Standards.
  • To have a representative voice on the RSSB board (via the nominated board director for the category of membership).
  • Have access to information and analysis such as output from the Safety Risk Model, Precursor Indicator Model, access to SMIS and SMIS Health Checks, online National Incident Reporting, Vehicle Track Interaction Strategic Model and future risk management tools.
  • Have access to a wealth of technical expertise
  • The ability to influence the scope and shape of the industry research programme for today’s railway and contribute to the development of longer term strategies for the future.
  • Receive support and best practice in the development of Safety Management Systems.
  • Obtain technical guidance and support on the impact of Europe on the GB Railway and be part of a forum to exchange views on European issues and legislation.
  • Receive RSSB publications.
  • Receive invitations to RSSB facilitated conferences.
