Safety Intelligence Teams

Safety performance is analysed and reported by two intelligence teams within the Safety Knowledge and Planning department. The roles of the two teams and examples of the outputs they produce are described below.


Safety Intelligence Strategy Team

The responsibilities of the Safety Intelligence Strategy Team include the identification of new or emerging risk issues, the production of safety performance reports, and operational feedback.
On the report production side, a major responsibility is the production of the Annual Safety Performance Report. In achieving this, and in the production of all other safety performance reports, the team works closely with the safety intelligence delivery team.
On the operational feedback side, the team produces a range of documents containing learning points for the industry. Subjects include safety-related topics within the GB rail industry, the rail industry of other countries and other industries worldwide.

Safety Intelligence Delivery Team

The main role of the Safety Intelligence Delivery Team is to analyse safety performance data and to monitor railway wide safety risk, ensuring that both RSSB and the industry are aware of the contributors to risk and any changes to them. This is achieved by using a number of data sources, the main one being the Safety Management Information System (SMIS). This includes checking for errors by working with other industry bodies, analysing the data and then reporting the results via safety performance reports.
The team also responds to data requests from both RSSB and the industry and provides statistics to European bodies.
