Strategy for Standards Management

The document – a strategy for standards management – was approved by RSSB members on 13 October 2005.

The strategy represents a significant shift in the way standards are managed, in that it enables duty holders to take more direct control over their own activities. It also sets out the results, implications and some of the timescales and organisational issues for the industry to consider.

The number of mandatory Railway Group Standards is expected to halve, and the remaining 50% will be maintained as guidance or migrate to support duty holders’ safety management systems. Some will disappear altogether.

In future, many interfaces between duty holders will be governed by Technical Specifications for Interoperability (TSIs) – and be determined at European level. The strategy will align RGSs with the structure of European Standards - to make things simpler for users of standards.
