What we do

The Rule Book, with over 100,000 people holding copies, is the Railway Group Standard that is most familiar to the industry. A team of RSSB technical specialists is solely devoted to dealing with all the issues surrounding its development and application.

The role covers

Provision of technical advice on issues associated with the Rule Book to support RSSB activities and services and the rail industry in general, including.
  • Train Operators and Network Rail developing proposals for Rules changes and deviations from Standards
  • Responding to enquiries received by the RSSB enquiry desk
  • Responding to reports raised through CIRAS
  • Ad hoc advice to all parts of the industry on the intended meaning of Rules and the reasons for adopting the current content
  • Liaison with Network Rail and ORR on emerging developments in signalling principles
  • Working with DfT and RSSB Research on level crossing issues
  • Attending Network Rail and Industry groups on the safe operation of on-track machinery and on-track plant
  • Working with Systems Interface Committees and Sub-groups
  • Operational leadership or input into a wide variety of Research projects
  • Advice and support to National Programmes
  • Advice to RAIB during preparation of investigation reports and responding on relevant recommendations
  • Appropriate operational advice to New Systems team in relation to ERTMS and GSM-R.
