RSSB Human Factors Team is pleased to announce that the sixth addition of the Human
Factors Research Catalogue is now available. The library is available on line which will facilitate regular updates.
The impetus for the Catalogue originated from a response to a recommendation from
the public
inquiry report into the Southall train accident.
“All parties in the rail industry should co-operate in the collection of evidence
to support reliable research into human behaviour studies relating to driver performance”
The library builds on earlier additions and includes a range of literature, focused on key issues salient to the rail industry. The library includes rail specific research from both the UK and international railways, research from safety critical industries such as aviation, nuclear, and chemical, and from the road vehicle driver context. While considerable research has been performed within the GB rail industry, it is important to recognise that many of the issues are common to other industries, and therefore we can gain insight from research in these areas.
The online 2009 Human Factors Library can be found at www.rssbhumanfactorslibrary.co.uk. The library has a sophisticated search facility which allows articles and papers to be retrieved easily, using parameters such as the author, date of publication, or keywords from the document. A synopsis is provided for every paper and, where copyright permission has been granted, the full paper is available.
This library benefits the rail industry by its potential to increase understanding and awareness of human factors. In turn this should help reduce risk, improve business performance and, ultimately, customer satisfaction. Its papers will help to demonstrate where human factors knowledge can be usefully applied to improve safety performance.
