Workforce Development

What we do

Workforce Development (WD) is defined as those aspects of education and training, competence, accreditation, licensing and assessment having application to the railway workforce. Our key strategic aim is to actively develop and support innovation in WD
within the GB rail industry.

We work with industry partners on strategic issues, particularly GoSkills (the Sector Skills Council for Passenger Transport), the Association of Railway Training Providers, and members of the Rail Industry Skills Forum (RISF). Much of our strategic work is also in the European context with the ERA and UIC. Most of our work, however, focuses on offering RSSB members practical advice in the area of workforce development.

Technical Deliverables

Mechanisms

  • Annual industry briefing days, workshops for front-line trainers, technical conferences and presentation of papers at industry conferences and workshops in the UK and Europe.
  • A programme of technical visits and participation in various industry groups.
  • The RSSB Simulation Group deals with strategic issues of technology in WD and we also attend the UK Simulator Users Group.
  • Our extranet allows individuals and industry groups to collaborate and network online about Workforce Development issues.
  • We produce a monthly podcast featuring interviews with stakeholders on topical issues.

We also provide support within RSSB and externally for standards change and reviews.
