Community Safety

Community Safety Projects

The RSSB's National Programmes, Railway Operations team assist the industry by providing a support service. Part of the service is the provision of communications to ensure that good practice is spread throughout the industry. This is achieved through dedicated websites, newsletters, workshops, etc. Some of the services are detailed below:

Community Safety Resource Centre

The Community Safety Resource Centre website contains information on all aspects of the industry’s approach to community safety matters. The aim of the site is to provide the industry with a one-stop-shop for resources and information on community safety issues. Launched at the 2009 Community Safety Forum, the site is still fairly new. Areas of the site focus on community safety topics, including assaults, trespass, vandalism, suicide, graffiti, obstructions on the line, cable and cycle theft and ticket vending machines. Each has its own designated page providing a foundation to build on, and populate with shared industry knowledge. As new information becomes available, the site will develop and improve. Access to the site is password protected but will be granted freely to industry staff. The website can be found at: www.railcommunitysafety.com

Community Safety Education

Trackoff

Trackoff is an educational website owned and funded by RSSB. The aim of the website is to provide railway safety educational resources to schools and organisations working with children and young people. The resources are aimed at supporting classroom activities through the National curriculum. These can be accessed through http://www.trackoff.org

No Messin!

No Messin! is a programme of diversionary activities organised by Network Rail every summer in railway crime hotspot areas. No Messin! aims to give youngsters new interests which will deter them from inappropriate behaviour involving the railway. http://www.no-messin.com/

Working with football authorities

A Train Operator Football Alliance (TOFA, chaired by ATOC) and a Rail Football Forum (RFF, chaired by the Football Association) have been set up to discuss issues around transporting fans to football matches. The TOFA comprises the train operating groups, with Network Rail, BTP and ORR. The RFF comprises TOFA, FA, football leagues, football supporter organisations, the Home Office, the UK Football Policing Unit and BTP.

RFF has agreed a list of priorities to tackle, which include better communication of kick-off times, train timetables and engineering works, as well as identifying ways to improve the behaviour of some fans on the trains.

This is an ATOC project, financed by RSSB (National Programmes).
