Denis Tunnicliffe appointed to the House of Lords

Rail Safety and Standards Board (RSSB) congratulated their chairman, Denis Tunnicliffe, CBE, who was appointed to the House of Lords on Saturday 1 May.

Denis Tunnicliffe, independent non executive chairman of RSSB, was one of 46 new peers to be appointed on Saturday. The appointments are the first batch of new working peers since 2001.

Len Porter, RSSB chief executive, said, ‘The staff of RSSB are delighted with the news. Denis will be able to use his considerable experience of management in the aviation industry and the transport sector to promote transport within the House of Lords at a time when interest in the railways has never been greater.’

Denis was born in 1943, was made a CBE in 1993 and is married with two adult sons and one grandchild.

Denis Tunnicliffe
Denis Tunnicliffe CBE, joined BOAC as a co-pilot after graduating with a maths degree from University College London. He flew VC10’s and B747’s for 6 years before joining the management team of the newly created British Airways. He held senior positions in industrial relations, planning, procurement, marketing and strategy.

In 1988 he became managing director of London Underground, joining some nine months after the Kings Cross tragedy. He served in that role for ten years before becoming chairman of LU and chief executive of London Transport, a position he held until its break up in year 2000 with the inception of Transport for London.

In 2002 he joined the United Kingdom Atomic Energy Authority as non-executive chairman. The Authority is responsible for the safe environmental restoration of its old research sites and the supervision of the UK’s fusion research including the world leading European facility at Culham.
