The Federal Railroad Administration of the United States Department of Transportation and the Strategic Rail Authority have signed a memorandum of understanding to develop co-operation between the two countries in the field of research.

Safety on the national rail network has improved in a number of key areas according to the latest Annual Safety Performance Report, published by Rail Safety and Standards Board (RSSB) today. Rail travel continues to be one of the safest forms of public transport, and is nine times safer than car travel, per passenger mile.

International co-operation to tackle the risks associated with worldwide level crossing use was the subject of discussion at the 8th International Level Crossing Symposium and Managing Trespass Seminar in Sheffield, UK. The symposium was the most internationally diverse specialist level crossing and trespass conference ever held.

The Health and Safety Laboratory (HSL) has been awarded the contract to deliver the first phase of a key research project on behalf of Rail Safety and Standards Board (RSSB) looking into the health and safety effects resulting from crowding on trains and at stations.

Level crossings present one of the largest sources of risk to trains and road vehicle users, in addition to the sizeable risks pedestrian users expose themselves to if they use level crossings incorrectly. There is an increasing need for the rail industry to raise awareness of these risks through events such as the 8th International Level Crossing Symposium and Managing Trespass Seminar which will be held in Sheffield, UK from 13 - 16 April 2004.

From this week, the rail industry has much greater control of the process for creating safety standards through a consensus-based process that is overseen by the Rail Safety and Standards Board (RSSB). This change to the system for creating rules supports the rail industry objectives of providing a safe, reliable and efficient railway.
