Press Releases31/01/2008Report on Safety in 2007 and Industry Strategic Safety Plan for 2008-10 publishedRSSB has published a report summarising the safety performance of the rail industry for 2007, and the industry’s strategic safety plan for 2008 -10. Industry safety performance has generally been maintained, and in some areas improved. However, there was one passenger killed in a train accident at the beginning of the year (the first for over two years). The strategic plan shows industry trajectories for the key areas of risk and gives an industry wide perspective of initiatives being taken by train operators and Network Rail. For the first time quantified trajectories have been established in a number of areas through the aggregation of individual company plans and the specific actions which duty holders intend to take to mitigate risk associated with their operation. The strategy also takes an initial look at how the industry might expect to perform in terms of meeting the Department for Transport’s High Level Output Specifications for safety and concludes there should be confidence that these can be achieved. Anson Jack, Director, Policy, Research and Risk said ‘The summary report for 2007 shows that the industry is maintaining its focus on safety while coping with growing levels of activity. The Railway Strategic Safety Plan which represents the product of significant industry cooperation, demonstrates the approach to safety planning in Great Britain’s railway industry. ‘It is based on duty holders’ initiatives and the projections of the safety benefits they will achieve. Work continues at a system level to develop the industry’s overall approach to safety management and to respond to the external environment in which the railways operate. Taken together with regular safety performance reporting, this provides a holistic approach to safety management’. Copies of the plan and summary for 2007 are available to download at Summary of Safety Performance 2007 - Ends- For further information please contact the Rail Safety and Standards Board press office, on 020 7904 7524/5 or visit the website on www.rssb.co.uk Notes to editors: RSSB builds industry-wide consensus and facilitates the resolution of difficult cross-industry issues.
