RSSB is pleased to announce that Correl Rail Limited has approved Karen Engineering Limited for the manufacture of torsion bars and anti roll bars, used in the overhaul of rolling stock bogies under the Railway Industry Supplier Approval Scheme (RISAS).

The rail industry’s safety performance has progressively advanced to a point where the likelihood of a passenger being involved in a train accident is now at an historical low. Statistics issued by RSSB firmly establish rail as the safest form of land transport in Britain whilst clearly identifying the remaining risk that needs to be managed. The figures demonstrate that the investment by industry and government in technology, training, research and their ongoing commitment to safety have paid off, and are continuing to pay off.

Thousands of schools will return from their summer holidays having each been sent a new Trackoff DVD. Trackoff is Britain’s rail industry initiative to help educate children and teenagers about safe conduct on the railway. The website – www.trackoff.org - and resources have now been refreshed and updated, and a Trackoff DVD has been sent to over 30,000 primary and secondary schools across England, Scotland and Wales.

The railways in Europe – including Great Britain - have taken a major step forward in engaging with high level EU decision makers on level crossing safety. The European Level Crossing Forum (ELCF), which is facilitated by RSSB, was one of four major signatories of the European Road Safety Charter – a new European Commission initiative designed to develop firm action to reduce traffic accidents and fatalities through exchange of best practice across the EU.

Rail Safety and Standards Board (RSSB) has published an Overview of safety performance for 2008, to provide the industry with some initial indications of trends in risk. The report provides the rail industry with a concise synopsis of the key safety indicators and trends for 2008, ahead of the more comprehensive analysis in the Annual Safety Performance Report (ASPR) to be published in April.
