RSSB RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT GRANT SCHEME

A new grant scheme to support industry research and development

RSSB is piloting a new grant scheme to provide more direct support for research and development (R&D) projects amongst individual rail industry stakeholders.

Primarily aimed at projects with a more direct route to industry application, the grant is intended to help individual RSSB members overcome potential financial obstacles to the development and implementation of R&D.

Under this new grant scheme, responsibility for the management of the project remains with the applicant, although RSSB may provide technical expertise where requested.

RSSB will provide up to 50% of the investment, with a maximum of £100,000 per project (there is no limit to the overall project value). Applicants for this grant must form a consortium which includes at least one RSSB member company as the lead party. The consortium’s contribution must include at least a 20% cash (ie incremental cost) element. The remainder could be made up of contributions-in-kind, such as the use of existing specialist equipment.

The benefit of the grant to the applicant is a reduction in investment risk without loss of management control of the project, with potentially quicker results than through other routes. For the industry as a whole, the grant scheme will increase the probability of research results being implemented, given the buy-in implied by the industry contribution. This will increase the overall value to industry delivered by research.
