Safety Management Information System (SMIS)The Safety Management Information System (SMIS) is a national IT system used by all Railway Group members to record all safety related events that occur on Network Rail controlled infrastructure. Legislation mandates its use so that all data is accessible to Railway Group Members in order that they can use the information to analyse risk, predict trends and focus activities on major areas of safety concern. RSSB, on behalf of the industry has sponsored a major upgrade of the Safety Management Information System (SMIS) during 2003, culminating in its implementation on Monday 1 December 2003. Whilst titled Improved SMIS (ISMIS) for project purposes, the system name remains as SMIS. SMIS has now been fully converted into a web-based application. This is one of the first ‘shared’ IT systems used by all Railway Group members that is now available as a secure system on the internet. Over 60 separate organisations can now access SMIS via the web. Now RSSB, on behalf of the Industry, is initiating a major programme over the next two years to upgrade and enhance the industry’s Safety Management Information System (SMIS).
