Safety Performance Reporting

Reporting of the industry’s safety performance takes place at regular intervals. Each month, a summary of safety performance is produced which describes the main events that have occurred during the month, focusing on fatalities, train accidents and SPADs. The report compares current progress on a number of such indicators with previous years.

In addition to the monthly summaries, more detailed safety performance reports are produced quarterly and annually.

RSSB's risk analysis team also provides risk based safety performance data to the industry periodically. This comprises the following:

  • The outputs from the Safety Risk Model and the risk ranking methodology for Signals Passed At Danger (SPADs) that are used within the annual and quarterly safety performance reports to measure performance against the risk based objectives agreed by the industry within the Railway Group Safety Plan (RGSP).
  • Special Topic Reports (Str) that provide in-depth studies of identified high risk areas within the rail network. The reports incorporate both statistical and risk based data analyses. Where appropriate conclusions and recommendations are made to reduce current levels of risk. Recent topics have included road vehicle level crossings and SPAD formal investigation reports. Special Topic Reports can be found by clicking on the publications section.
