The key headlines from last month include 2 reportable accidents: a freight train striking a van at Raven automatic open level crossing; and a passenger train colliding with another train on arrival at low speed at Edinburgh Waverley station.  No injuries were reported in either accident.

Rail’s positive track record on safety continues to be evident with no accidental fatalities to passengers or members of the workforce, although 3 members of the public died in separate incidents.

In terms of the issues which can contribute to accidents occurring, there were 21 signals passed at danger (SPADs) in September.  Five of these were risk-ranked as potentially significant, but none of them as severe.
