New improved standard for platform safety
Featured story

Rail companies should check they are taking full advantage of an updated standard capturing good practice in platform safety, according to rail industry body RSSB.

The industry has collectively agreed and signed up to an updated Rail Industry Standard: Passenger Train Dispatch and Platform Safety Measures (RIS-3703-TOM), (Issue 3), which now provides rail companies with much more detail and clarity on requirements and how they relate to legal obligations.

The platform-train interface accounts for nearly half of the fatality risk to passengers, and 20% of the overall injury risk. Network Rail and train operating companies lead on managing this risk, and RSSB is encouraging anyone involved to familiarise themselves with the update.

The standard has been published at the same time as a refreshed “topic hub” on the RSSB website, making it easier to find information and resources pertinent to improving safety for passengers on stations.

RSSB’s Director of Standards, Tom Lee, said: The railway is fundamentally very safe for passengers, and rail companies are well-practised in managing the risks at the platform-train interface. However, it would be prudent for members to check that their approaches and processes are up-to-date, and check that their safety management system and operational practice out in the field reflect the good practice contained in the standard, where these are relevant to their particular company.
