RSSB’s remote condition monitoring research could save industry £30m over 10 years
Featured story

The set of tools produced by research into cross-industry remote condition monitoring (RCM) could improve reliability, availability, maintenance efficiency and safety.

The tools include detail for a data sharing IT infrastructure, a commercial agreement template, and a good practice guide for how to get the most out of cross-industry RCM.  These are expected to reduce the costs of agreeing commercial arrangements and, more significantly, reduce system integration costs by up to 90% by providing standardised data protocols.

Other benefits include:

  • 90% reduction in time and legal costs
  • 90% reduction in system intervention costs
  • 15% reduction in equipment costs

Over a ten-year period of introducing new cross-industry RCM systems, this could reduce implementation costs by £30m.

RCM is the ability for components of railway infrastructure and rolling stock to monitor each other, identifying when an item needs to be repaired or replaced.
