South West Trains prepares to load up new Rule Book app

South West Trains rail staff are preparing to upload a live version of a new Rule Book app, developed by rail industry body, RSSB.

Following a trial by guards at South West Trains, the app has now been fully developed for the operator’s Apple devices on iOS such as iPhones and iPads, as part of a broader programme to make the app fully available on Android and Windows during the 2017-8 financial year.

The 120,000 rail staff responsible for operating and maintaining Britain’s railways use the Rule Book as an essential reference, as it sets out clear instructions that must be followed in certain safety critical scenarios.

Up until now, staff will have relied exclusively on either paper or downloadable “pdf” versions, but the app makes it much easier to use and update.

RSSB’s Human Factors Specialist Jordan Smith said: The trials with SWT guards were immensely successful, demonstrating that the app is easy to use. The app enables users to access Rule Book content offline, makes it easier to search for content and has the benefit of automatic updates once new documents have been published.
