Use of mobile devices – advice following Bad Aibling arrest

The arrest of the signaller in Germany following the Bad Aibling collision, who has admitted playing a game on his mobile at the time, highlights the importance of briefing all staff on the risks of using mobile and electronic devices.

Feedback from train operators and RAIB has confirmed there is widespread understanding of, and support for, the need to ensure all staff to be effectively briefed to not use mobile phones.  To support them, a successful education programme on mobile phones was developed by RSSB, inspired by another overseas incident involving potential mobile phone use, in Chatsworth, USA in 2008.
