The purpose of the High-Integrity Systems Group (HISG) is to establish and share best practice in the area of software in high integrity railway applications. (This includes firmware, operating systems, applications, and application data.
The scope of the group’s considerations is software that is used to operate the railway where safety and/or reliability are important. It excludes systems that are used primarily for commercial purposes. Signalling systems, brake and traction control systems, route setting systems, and train crew and passenger information systems are within scope, but ticketing systems and off-line performance monitoring systems are not.
The group reports to the Data and Risk Strategy Group.
The rationale for the establishment of the group arose from discussion at an RSSB Board meeting in May 2011, in the context of a wrong side signalling failure at Milton Keynes on 29 December 2008. It was subsequently agreed that the Railway Industry Association (RIA) would host a cross-industry workshop to enable a focused discussion to take place regarding high integrity software in the GB rail sector. The outcomes from this workshop led to RSSB establishing this group.
Message from the chair
The High Integrity Systems Group has the purpose of establishing and sharing best practice in high integrity railway applications. To meet this end my aims and vision for this group is to be more action focussed in this space. In the short to create a set of FAQs for industry to improve capability across the lifecycle of high integrity applications and in the longer term to produce an over-arching Rail Industry Standard. This will be supported by measuring high integrity system incidents via SMIS and feeding this information into the RSSB’s Strategic Risk Model (SRM) and Precursor Indicator Model (PIM), providing insight and management of emergent risks as the rail industry moves more deeply into high integrity applications for its operations.
