R2 is the UK’s central asset management system for railway vehicles and components. It is used by around 70 organisations across the UK rail industry, including Network Rail, RoSCos, passenger and freight train operating companies, certification bodies, vehicle builders and maintainers, and component manufacturers and overhaulers.
R2 is there to help capture vehicle information and improve your maintenance planning.
R2 holds details of every vehicle registered to operate on the UK railway, and tracks the life history of each vehicle and major component, including:
- Certification and registration/deregistration (a legal requirement for all UK vehicles)
- Organisational responsibilities (owner, keeper, operator, maintainer) for each asset
- Fitment, removal, location, utilisation and defect tracking of key components (engines, wheelsets, CCS equipment)
- Defects raised, actioned, repaired and analysed
- Utilisation based on operational mileage and/or duration
- Asset maintenance scheduling (for major and minor exams) based on time and/or utilisation
- Campaigns (modification applied to a fleet of vehicles) and ad hoc work due and done
- Wheel measurements and axle test results for wheelsets
R2 supports regulatory and business requirements for record keeping and information sharing, including:
- Single repository for all vehicles and major components with their full maintenance history
- Published open web service interfaces for easy information exchange with depot management systems
- Compliance with all applicable UK rolling stock standards for rail vehicle and component information
- Support for meeting the requirements of the National Vehicle Register
- Compatibility with European interoperability directives (TAF and TAP TSIs)
- Data support for a Defect Recording, Analysis and Corrective Action System (DRACAS).
Its key features include:
- Browser-based interface accessible by PCs and mobile devices
- Information shared across the industry, essential when multiple organisations have overlapping interests in the same asset
- Availability of functionality is controlled by a user’s role and their organisation’s relationship with the asset
- Ability to upload documents (certificates, technical drawings, task lists) and link them to the relevant item
- Authorised signatories submit online requests for vehicle design, certification and organisational changes, which are reviewed and approved by Managed Service experts
- Seamless information exchange with resource allocation systems (TOPS, Gemini, Genius, Integrale) for unit/set formation, utilisation, defects, depot visits, and work due and done
- Web service open interface, allowing exchange of vehicle, component, formation, defect, utilisation and work due/done information with authenticated external systems
- Allocation of resources (units, sets or individual vehicles) to user-defined fleets for resource management and reporting
- Definition of maintenance regimes with hierarchical groups of activities (a sequence of minor exams followed by a major exam), and assignment of resources to them
- Completion of a maintenance activity automatically prompts and schedules its next occurrence, and updates predictions for the other activities in its maintenance cycle
- Maintenance predictions can be based on historical utilisation of a resource over time, rather than a notional utilisation rate, reducing over-maintenance
- Defect tracking includes initial symptoms, casualty effects (for operational delays), action required, concessions granted, work required and done, and coding of action taken
- Recording completion of jobs selected from a list of work due for vehicles at a depot, and completion of further unplanned work arising
- A data warehouse for predefined and ad hoc reporting, including vehicles approaching deregistration, defect analysis, utilisation per casualty, work done outside tolerance, and campaign progress.
