Project Summary

This research identified and evaluated viable platform gap filler solutions for the platform/train interface to provide information to industry on their potentials to reduce the risk from slips, trips and falls.

Project Abstract

Project Briefs are hosted on
This project was commissioned following an investigation by RAIB into a fatal incident.  The RAIB report recommended that the rail industry be provided with guidance on reducing risk at the platform/train interface. Platform gap fillers are one possible way of reducing this risk.
This study found that there is a range of potential platform gap filler solutions available, which can be fitted either to infrastructure or rolling stock.  These options need to be considered alongside other actions to positively influence passenger behaviour at the PTI.  They need to be location specific, and have the potential to reduce the severity of injuries associated with boarding and alighting.
This research has produced a technical summary report and research brief.
