SMIS Current Activity: Improving Usability, System Performance and Business Intelligence
SMIS is the railway’s safety management and intelligence system, it has been running for over 20 years, has many users and is the envy of the world.
This section provides links to some of the activities we are undertaking to improve SMIS.
SMIS users have told us how they would like SMIS to be improved in order for them to make more use of it. Therefore we are pursuing a programme of work that will remove some of the barriers that will prevent or inhibit users getting the information they require. Activities either recently completed or in progress to improve the many aspects of SMIS are described in more detail using the links below.
Improving SMIS System Performance: Business Intelligence
RSSB is improving the inner workings of SMIS so that data is available more quickly for analysis and it is easier to make changes that users require.
We process the data from SMIS, and other reporting systems such as Close Call, to generate safety insights which support industry decision making and help provide the direction for risk management activities.
New Recording and Classification Functionality for Accident Causes
New functionality is available in SMIS for companies to record and classify their accident causes. This will enable the extraction of company-specific and industry-wide safety intelligence from the accident data, and will help to inform future safety decisions.
Work is underway to simplify the SMIS input forms, thereby reducing the time needed to enter data into SMIS.
Longer-term benefits include the ability to enter safety events via a mobile device, and to export safety data from other safety management systems directly into SMIS.
The information in SMIS underpins the industry’s risk and evidence-based approach to safety management. Decision makers need information that is accurate, complete and timely. The data quality programme provides a framework in which quality can be measured.
