New course launch: Frontline Leaders Training

Staff who manage and lead front line operational employees —frontline leaders—have an important but challenging role. The industry recognises that these individuals can benefit from common leadership and managerial skills to help develop and manage the competence of frontline staff.

A frontline leader is anyone who manages and leads frontline operational employees such as driver managers, local operations managers, section supervisors, supervisors and team leaders of track workers, guard and conductor managers.

They have a significant impact on frontline staff competence, performance and engagement, including improved safety outcomes, and increased staff and organisational performance.

RSSB undertook research (project T1142) to provide industry with resources to help develop the skillset of operational frontline leaders. The research focused on the managerial and leadership competencies frontline leaders require to develop and manage the competence of their frontline staff. The research also set out the template for a front-line leadership training programme.

Course overview

To help industry embed the research findings, a two-day training course has been launched to support organisations upskill their operational frontline leaders. 

The Frontline Leaders Training course equips frontline leaders with the skills they need to positively impact the competence, performance, and engagement of frontline staff, including:

  • Identifying the role frontline leaders play in managing others
  • Identifying barriers that limit frontline leaders’ performance
  • Exploring different approaches to leadership and leadership preferences
  • Discussing approaches to manage conflict, undertake difficult conversations and interact with challenging clients
  • Providing coaching and feedback
  • Using operational scenarios to practice and embed the skills and knowledge learnt over the course.

Paul Leach, trainer for the Frontline Leaders Training, said: “This course helps frontline leaders reflect on their style and understand the impact they have in the workplace. The course allows leaders to identify how they can improve and provides them with different scenarios to practice leadership skills and identify self- development opportunities.”
