What can you Expect at This Year’s WCRR Event?

Featured story
This year’s World Congress on Railway Research (WCRR) is taking place at a particularly exciting and challenging time for the rail industry. Here’s a quick look ahead at the formats that will be used to help delegates as well as the highly topical and relevant key themes.

What formats will be used?

WCRR 2022 will use four different types of event formats for delegates, each format type is designed to enable delegates to gain specific benefits most easily. These are:

  • 15-minute presentations of novel research with brief question and answer sessions are designed to update delegates quickly with the most important findings
  • interactive presentation sessions are designed to enable delegates to discuss issues arising from research with the researchers in more detail
  • ‘Masterclasses’ will be focused on how research can be successfully implemented
  • tailored education and skills session will benefit early career researchers and professionals.

Having these four different types of event formats makes it easier for both industry practitioners and researchers to gain the benefits they most need.

What are the key themes?

A theme which will be familiar to delegates from previous congresses is ‘condition-based maintenance’. This is always relevant and will be one of the themes WCRR addresses. Other themes are related more strongly to current events, these are:

  • the change in demand post-pandemic and effective engagement with passengers
  • decarbonisation throughout the railways
  • challenges and opportunities resulting from digitisation and other technological changes.

The breadth and practicalities of these themes ensures that all delegates will find highly valuable sessions for their daily work, in addition to the plenary sessions and networking opportunities.
