RSSB we’re here to support the rail industry to make
the GB rail network the safest in Europe. The Rail
Risk Portal is a platform for accessing outputs from
RSSB’s work to help those operating the railway
understand and manage safety risk.
outputs include: results from our modelling of risk;
analysis of safety data we have collected; and tools we
have developed to support understanding of risk and
inform decision making.
To access the Rail Risk Portal you must:
The Rail Risk Portal contains the following tools
The information and supporting tools have been
developed to enable our members in the GB rail industry
to benchmark their performance and support them in
formulating their own safety policies, plans and
The ASPR contains safety intelligence and risk information. It is published annually.
The Precursor Indicator Model measures the underlying risk from train accidents by tracking changes in accident precursors
The Safety Risk Model (SRM) models the safety risk of the GB mainline railway.
A detailed summary of risk estimates for the SRM are available in a series of downloadable tables.
The Buffer Stop Risk Assessment Tool is designed to meet the requirements of section 11, Requirements for Buffer Stops and End Impact Walls, of RIS-7016-INS, 'Interface between Station Platforms, Track, Trains and Buffer Stops'.
The Definitions Dictionary has been developed to provide users with definitions for terms used within the Rail Risk Portal and the tools available on it
The GeoSRM provides localised risk estimates by taking into consideration local features. Access is only to support the research project T972.
The Platform Aerodynamic Assessment Tool assists users in carrying out a platform aerodynamic risk assessment.
This tool is for RSSB members only. It is currently a beta version undergoing verification and trial with selected users. Please contact Chris Harrison (firstname.lastname@example.org) for further information.
The Risk Profile Tool – powered by SMIS – provides rail companies with an up-to-date, informed calculation of the nature of the health and safety risk they face, allowing them to make targeted, efficient intervention that improves safety and reduces cost.
The SPAD Risk Ranking Tool gives a measure of the level of risk associated with each SPAD that occurs, and as such enables the industrys performance to be measured in terms of a percentage reduction year on year
Taking Safe Decisions sets out the industry consensus view of how safety is taken into account when taking decisions. Taking safe decisions documents can be found on the main RSSB website. The analysis tool is available to RSSB members through the Rail-Risk-Portal.
