Course overview

Every day, rail workers stand at the crossroads between the public and the railway, facing potential traumatic events. From tragic fatalities and accidents at level crossings to unexpected encounters with stray livestock or incidents of workplace violence, their roles are fraught with emotional challenges. According to RSSB’s mental health survey, around 10% of rail workers display symptoms consistent with clinical post-traumatic stress disorder—a figure more than twice as high as that found in the general population.

Equipping rail staff to prepare for and manage potentially traumatic events can help prevent significant psychological distress and facilitate recovery. Raising awareness of the realities of trauma and the support that is available are crucial aspects of effective organisational trauma management. This course responds to these needs, providing a clear, practical, and evidence-based approach to trauma management, which follows the principles in RSSB’s Guidance for responding to potentially traumatic events.
