A basic study of wheel/rail adhesion - Laboratory studies of the effects of water (TN-TRIB-4)

Last updated on 23 April 2013 10:10
Water falling on running rails, either as rain or dew, can drastically reduce adhesion. The laboratory experiments described in this report show that the effect of water on friction is both rapid and reversible. The friction of clean steel is reduced by water, that of oil contaminated steel more so.
