Experience and literature on dc machines has been reviewed with a view to examining insulation failure rates and means of anticipating failures. Several techniques are considered to warrant further investigation:- a) ultrasonic noise, whether due to mechanical vibration of coils or discharges. b) electrical discharge testing for voids.
