A note on the theoretical background to potential techniques for reducing wheel/rail rolling noise (IM-SAV-060)

A major source of noise from railways is wheel/rail rolling noise, which has been the subject of an extensive research programme at BR Research. Theoretical understanding of the phenomenon developed so far, although incomplete, is sufficient to allow proposals for various noise reduction techniques to be put forward for testing.
