Recent studies have investigated possible applications of new technology to the operation of lightly used railways. TM TAG 29 recommended radio signalling and modernised level crossings on the Norwich Division lines, and modernised crossings were also an important recommendation in TM TAG 72 a study of the Newcastle -Carlisle route.
