When attempts were first made to manufacture 2% phosphorus cast iron brakeblocks at BREL Horwich, it was found that the blocks cracked at the "knock-out" stage. Two measures to prevent cracking were considered:- a) slowing down the cooling track to allow more cooling time between casting and "knock-out". ...
