Characteristics of 'squat' type defects in B.S.11 steel rails (TN-MET-001)

Over the last few years there has been an increase in the number of rail defects known as "squats". This report defines the characteristics of these defects and shows that they represent a potential derailment hazard. Defect assessment methods and rejection criteria are discussed.
