Measuring stress free temperature in rails - Literature review and development recommendations (RR-MF-032)
Last updated on 16 August 2013 4:00
Maintenance of the correct stress free temperature (SFT) in welded railway track is important in preventing track buckling in hot weather. Welded rails are stressed to give the correct SFT on installation in track, but subsequent creep of the rail can result in the SFT being lost in some sections.
