The effect on wheel flanges of repeated impact of dowty oleo retarders (TN-FM-043)

The Research & Development Division was requested by C.M. & E.E. to examine the effect of the latest designs of Dowty Oleo Retarders on wagon wheel flanges in hump-shunting yards. The original Dowty booster-retarders exerted a 1.5 t upthrust while the oleo units were capable of a 2.27 t upthrust.
