The acceptable risks of derailment due to sideworn rails - preliminary assessment of the problem (IM-TS-005)

The present official limitation on sidewear was determined on the basis of theoretical work carried out by the Research Department during the late 1940's. The method used is now considered to be inappropriate but it did result in a simple rule that could be applied by the Permanent Way Staff.
