The all-steel welded construction of passenger vehicles has been standard on BR for some years. However corrosion and its prevention on such vehicles (and earlier riveted stock) has been an ever-present drain on materials and resources. Corrosion prevention prior to fabrication necessitated the oiling of the steel stock material.
