Ballast compaction project - An investigation into the effectiveness of several types of ballast compactor (TM-SM-60)

Present relaying and ballast cleaning techniques generally involve the replacement of uncompacted ballast. This report is concerned with an investigation into the desirability of pre-compacting and levelling the ballast before reinstatement of the track in order to provide a more stable, fault-free surface. Various types of compaction plant are assessed.
