Effect of speed on costs of operating a freight train. (IM-APT-018)

In recent years it has been impossible to raise freight train speeds because of the sharp increase in derailments which occurs. This is due to poor vehicle design, resulting in. (a) Instability of freight vehicles. (b) Excessive number of mechanical failures, e.g. axle failures due to hot boxes.
