Recent trends in European sleeper and fastening designs

Until recently, the main line railways of Europe have each developed sleeper and fastening specifications for their main line tracks largely independently. The need for increased interoperability, and the drive to open public utilities’ purchasing to open European tendering, have made it necessary to find ways of harmonising those requirements.
