Early and accurate rail flaw detection is of paramount importance for the safe and reliable operation of rail networks. Ultrasonics is the main NDT technique employed by the rail industry for rail inspection. However, conventional ultrasonic wheel probes are not optimised for reliable detection of small surface defects in rails.
