RIS-3781-TOM Iss 3
Requirements for the Operation of Freight Trains and the Conveyance of Dangerous Goods by any Train
Synopsis
Summary Of Changes
RIS-3781-TOM is intended for freight operating companies and operators of freight terminals, yards and those who prepare engineering trains. It sets out requirements and guidance relating to the safe operation of freight trains and the safe movement of dangerous goods.
New requirements have been included regarding the vehicle condition check to be undertaken before a freight train begins its journey, the securing of vehicles, brake overcharge and enhanced air brake continuity tests. The document has been restructured to make it easier to use.
Wagons entering the network that have not been prepared adequately and are subsequently involved in incidents cause delays with network-wide impacts. The changes to the standard have the potential to improve performance in freight operations through improvements in securing vehicles and train preparation activities.
These changes have the potential to save the industry £1m over five years.
