Training can support mental health and wellbeing in the rail industry

The World Health Organisation recognises World Mental Health Day on 10 October each year.

Despite an increasing number of companies embracing mental health awareness, mental health problems are unfortunately common in the workplace. Around 70 million work days are lost each year due to mental health problems in the UK, which costs employers approx. £2.4 billion per year.*

However, analysis of workplace interventions show a return to business of up to £9 for every £1 invested in supporting employees.**

The rail industry believes it can achieve greater business and industry benefits by working together on health and wellbeing. RSSB is listening to industry and their concerns. We have developed a suite of training courses to help improve the health and wellbeing of individuals in the railway.

In 2020 we collaborated with the mental health charity Mind to customise and offer two mental health e-learning courses specifically tailored for the rail industry. The courses are designed to improve mental health awareness in the workplace and help to managing mental health issues. We have recently refreshed these courses to further enhance the learner experience and better align them with individual and industry needs. Together we can start to reduce one of the leading causes of long-term absence in the rail industry.

Organisations can purchase an annual licence for each course and make them available to their employees. Individuals can also access them here

In September 2021, we also launched a new blended training course for Health and Wellbeing Champions and managers. Developed to address the training  needs of wellbeing champions, the course will increase understanding of physical and mental health and give the champions the skills to promote healthy behaviours in the workplace, as well as to care for themselves.

We understand the value of supporting good mental health at work and creating mentally healthy workplace. We recognise that every organisation is different, so we can work directly with you to develop bespoke courses. If you would like RSSB to deliver any of our mental health courses as a bespoke training, remotely or at a location of your choice, please email
