RSSB’s Taking Safe Decisions (TSD) provides guidance on how organisations can take safety into account when making decisions. Our guidance supports the application of the Common Safety Method for Monitoring and managing safety risk associated with change.

The Taking Safe Decisions principals provide guidance on how organisations can incorporate safety when making decisions. This tool will help to undertake a cost-benefit analysis (CBA) for a safety-related decision.

Legislation requires the application of the Common Safety Method for Risk Evaluation and Assessment (CSM RA) when there is significant change to the mainline railway. RSSB provides guidance on this.

The Risk Profile Tool (powered by SMIS) provides rail companies with an up-to-date, informed calculation of the nature of the health and safety risk they face. This allows companies to make targeted, efficient intervention that improves safety and reduces cost.

The Safety Risk Model (SRM) has been helping people in GB rail take sound, risk-based decisions for over two decades. It describes and quantifies the different risks associated with railway operations and maintenance. It helps decision makers set safety priorities and analyse safety-related costs and benefits so they can confidently and demonstrably meet legal requirements and wider business objectives.

RSSB has developed guidance—including a cost benefit analysis tool —that support more investment in health and wellbeing and result in savings for the rail industry.

The rail industry manages its health and safety risks and responsibilities with great care. We recognise that there is more we can do in areas such as Vibration, Noise, Dusts and Emissions. The industry is working hard to develop better management techniques in these areas.
