TN2301 Iss 1

Train front-end visibility requirements and safe integration

Synopsis

This technical note clarifies the application of standards and legislation for front-end visibility and safe integration of rolling stock within the railway system.

It also sets out guidance on the history and development of train visibility requirements and the role of train visibility in protecting against hazardous events occurring.

Summary Of Changes

This technical note was produced because industry required additional guidance when introducing rail vehicles without front-end yellow warning panels onto the GB mainline railway.

Rolling stock standards, and in particular GMRT2131 Audibility and Visibility of Trains, set out requirements to make trains visible to people. However, compliance with standards does not guarantee safety in operation. This technical note complements GMRT2131 to help users involved in the introduction of new rolling stock, or rolling stock modified in ways that affects its visibility.

It is applicable to:

  • project entities;
  • railway undertakings;
  • infrastructure managers; and
  • other parties affected by the process of integrating rolling stock onto a route.
