Sustainable rail…placing rail at the heart of a green economy.

We lead the industry’s sustainability plans to secure rail’s position as Britain’s leading low-carbon transport mode.

Rail is still the most sustainable form of mass transport, but others are catching up: electric cars are forecast to be cheaper than petrol cars by 2025. So, rail must evolve to ensure it remains the most sustainable choice for passengers and freight.

We’ve spearheaded the decarbonisation strategy which brings the industry together to work towards a shared vision for a railway with zero emissions. The strategy has created a common method and goals for infrastructure and rolling stock to develop sustainably together.

We’re playing a similar role in shaping rail’s contribution to clean air. The strategy we’re coordinating points the way to clear air quality targets for cleaner stations and urban environments. We aim to protect the natural environment by helping the industry to support biodiversity and curb waste and pollution.

Our research and thinking also accelerate work to improve quality of life. This includes goals to support regions with rail infrastructure and new, affordable and inclusive transport options. As part of our work to enhance rail’s social and economic impact, we set out to help the industry be an employer of choice.

By 2024, we will be firmly established as the leader in positioning rail as Britain's main mode of sustainable, low-carbon transport, which delivers social value for Britain. Our work prepares the railway to push towards net-zero emissions by 2050 (2045 in Scotland) and be the backbone of Britain’s sustainable transport network.
