How did you get into this role?

"I joined RSSB as a graduate analyst with a background in maths and no prior rail experience other than what comes with being a passenger."

Why RSSB?

"I wanted a role applying my mathematical skills to real life situations to make a real difference. The advertised role matched this perfectly."

What do you enjoy most about your current role?

"The challenging nature of the role, no two days are ever the same, and being able to shape the direction of RSSB’s safety analysis and reporting."

What are your possible career opportunities?

"RSSB has presented me with lots of different career opportunities. My technical skills provide opportunities to specialise, for instance within risk management or data analysis. They also set me up for leadership roles really well. I decided on a hybrid approach. I apply my technical skills while supporting others to do the same, shaping future direction."

What skills have you developed at RSSB?

"Technically, I have developed skills in risk management and data analysis, through structured learning and supported learning on the job. I have also developed my soft skills to complement this. Communicating well with stakeholders and managing individuals are essential in my role. Working with people who are so enthusiastic and knowledgeable about the railway has rubbed off on me—I know a bit about the railway now!"

Key achievements or career highlights at RSSB?

"Each of the many projects I have worked on during my time with RSSB has their own highlight. Overall, the best thing is seeing the work I do make a difference in our member organisations. I am particularly proud of my work on the Covid-19 transmission model and the regional Precursor Indicator Model. I have also improved safety reporting processes by changing team working methods within my team."
