To ensure safety is at the heart of everything industry does, we share analysis on how human and technical risk factors combine. We also deliver data-led guidance and interventions that lead to enhanced risk maturity. This work is underpinned by our safety strategy.

We’re the independent and expert source of information and analysis that brings the rail industry together to put safety at the heart of all it does. We work with our members to pinpoint issues and agree viable solutions that keep passengers, workers and the public safe.

Safety risk seldom has a single cause: the symptom might be an engineering fault, but the root could be in design, workplace culture or health and wellbeing. To find the answers, we turn to our experts across fields from engineering and operations to ergonomics and occupational health.

We track safety performance through the risk data we gather from industry, which enables us to deliver data-led guidance and interventions that lead to enhanced risk maturity. We develop tools and resources to help our members meet their legal obligations, and act as the industry’s corporate memory to ensure everyone learns from past incidents. We also look at how safety risk will affect the railway of the future.

Everything we do is underpinned by our safety strategy so that our work provides industry with a common approach to recognising and controlling hazards. By 2024, we will be the primary source of data, insights and guidance to manage risk effectively.

To make rail safer, we:
Gather data that show how the industry is performing, so we can spot emerging issues early and respond quickly.

Analyse and investigate how human and technical factors combine and overlap to create risk, and use the results to get to the heart of safety issues.

Find a common language to recognise hazards and make sure controls work together clearly and consistently.
Our work means the industry can:
Collaborate to combat risk by seeing rail as a single interconnected system not a collection of different interests.

Make better decisions, by using aids like our Taking Safe Decisions range, to keep rail safe, from the signal box to the trackside and the train cab.

Pinpoint underlying risk and spend money wisely by targeting safety investment.
Our work will help our members to:
Develop health and safety management tools and approaches.

Understand and propose controls for underlying causes.

Identify and analyse the emerging risks for the industry.

Improve the collation of cross-industry data on faults and failures.

Integrate our human factors knowledge and expertise across railway operations.
