Technical note: Engineering change (software and firmware), TN2306 Issue 1
Although standards RIS-2700-RST issue two and RIS-8270-RST issue 1.1 do apply to software and firmware, they do not explicitly address engineering changes in them. This is important because the effects of apparently small changes to software or firmware can be greater than expected. TN2306 helps users by providing additional guidance specific to these sorts of changes. It also draws together the existing information about changes to software or firmware in RIS-2700-RST issue two and RIS-8270-RST issue 1.1.
Technical notes are documents produced by RSSB to help with the application of standards, guidance or legislation about a particular topic. These are non-binding documents which do not change existing requirements or guidance so do not change the application of current standards or legislation.
TN2306 supports and complements RIS-2700-RST issue two by providing additional guidance regarding changes to software and firmware on rail vehicles.
TN2306 supports and complements RIS-8270-RST issue 1.1 by providing additional guidance on the potential effects of vehicle software and firmware changes on vehicle compatibility with infrastructure.
TN2306 supports and complements both standards by drawing together information from each that relates to software and firmware changes, so that users can find it all in one place.
-
Why has TN2306 been produced? This technical note has been produced in response to a request for guidance about engineering change management on rail vehicles as it relates to firmware or software changes.
-
What is the purpose of TN2306?This technical note signposts to existing standards and good practice in engineering change management about software and firmware so that users can find all of the relevant information easily.
-
Why is TN2306 important? There have been some small changes to software or firmware with unintended consequences. Small changes to software or firmware can be associated with a disproportionately high risk. For instance, National Incident Report 3858 (Un-demanded traction in coast, whilst undertaking updated (Coupling mode) speed control software testing on a Class 196) showed that this risk is increased when more than one change is intended to be implemented at the same time.
