Railway Industry Supplier Approval Scheme

RISAS is the Railway Industry Supplier Approval Scheme, which ensures key suppliers can become recognised as best-in-class at delivering on the most challenging and high-risk aspects of rail vehicle maintenance, repair and overhaul.

With 20,000 passenger services running every weekday, the country relies on safe, high-performing rolling stock in order to achieve demanding levels of availability and reliability.

RISAS provides economies of scale to the GB railway by reducing duplication in the auditing and assessment of suppliers of critical goods and services for the overhaul of rolling stock assets and components. It ensures that suppliers of critical products in the rail vehicle after-market sector have the appropriate systems, processes, competence, resources, facilities and procedures.

RISAS was designed by the industry, for the industry, to ensure that Safety Certificate holders and other major customers, such as ROSCOs, are able to rely upon common third-party assessments delivered by accredited Railway Industry Supplier Approval Bodies (RISABs).

In 2019, the RISAS scheme is undergoing a review to ensure it continues to meet the needs of the rail industry.

RISAS is managed by RSSB to ensure it remains an independent, industry scheme working in the interests of safety.  We provide oversight, coordination and a team of dedicated specialists to provide the necessary industry interfaces, service provider delivery and coordination, and ongoing system improvements.
